Bordeaux vs. Stade Rennes

The decisive moment of the game arrived after 23 minutes when Benoit Tremoulinas' cross to the near post was headed in by Wendel. Despite their impressive start, Bordeaux needed all three points to move back to the summit after Lyon had edged ahead of them by a point with their 2-1 win over Toulouse yesterday.

Manager Laurent Blanc opted to start Yoann Gourcuff despite the playmaker suffering a thigh injury in training during the week.

It was Gourcuff who first tested goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez with a ninth-minute free-kick that required a good save. Rennes threatened a minute later when Yann Mvila swooped following some lax defending from the home side but only to shoot into the side-netting.

Bordeaux went ahead after 23 minutes when Tremoulinas found room down the left to deliver a cross to the near post where Wendel was stationed to powerfully head home. Marouane Chamakh then missed a good chance to make it 2-0 just before the break when he headed wide unmarked from the centre of the area.

Bordeaux controlled proceedings after the break with Douchez denying them a second on 65 minutes when he first saved a Wendel free-kick before quickly recovering to nip the ball off the feet of Gourcuff.

Gourcuff then shot wastefully after being freed by a long ball and while David Bellion also failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity against Douchez, Bordeaux secured the win to go back to the top.
